It’s not actually all that bad, reading wise. The problem is the urge to chuck the book to the other end of the room, exclaiming ‘bullshit!’
You need to get some “citation needed” stickers.
More interesting than the parts he doesn’t cite, I’m finding, are the places where he switches from the normal literature to his own work, generally without saying so. That and the things he doesn’t mention at all. “Authoritative” indeed…

A much more fulfilling read would be Jeremy Taylor’s “Not a Chimp” (blog here: http://notachimp.blogspot.com.au/ ) which is a fully evolutionary argument why the two species aren’t so close together.
I’ll look that over, thanks – it should be useful to determine what’s a real difference and what’s not.
